When sophisticated counterfeiters threaten to counterfeit a large quantity of products, encrypted barcodes are often an effective solution.
All encrypted barcodes require a decryption key to verify authenticity. Traditional decryption keys must be kept hidden to protect against counterfeiters accessing and understanding the encryption methodology so that they might generate additional “genuine” barcodes. Because of this risk, traditional decryption keys are not stored on local devices—instead, they require real-time internet or database access in order to decrypt the barcode and verify authenticity.
To address this issue, Microtrace developed a new type of encryption methodology which allows for secure barcodes to be authenticated without real-time internet or database connectivity. Microtrace’s encryption modeling is done using sophisticated, artificial-intelligence technology so that decryption keys (AI models) can be preloaded on scanning devices and visible to counterfeiters without compromising security. Unlike traditional encryption keys, the Microtrace system is asymmetric, which means a counterfeiter that is able to access the AI model, cannot discern the encryption methodology, and cannot gain information on how to make additional “genuine” barcodes.
Delivery flexibility and ease of use
Because the Microtrace mobile app stores the AI decryption models locally—without taking up lots of storage space, instant field validation without internet access is possible.
The AI models have low memory requirements—you can decrypt millions of anti-counterfeit barcodes without filling up storage space on a smart phone or OEM scanning device—and are stored within the Microtrace mobile application. The app uses traditional security 2D barcode software authentication and no special reading equipment or lighting is required.
Additionally, since Microtrace’s encrypted barcodes are authenticated on your local device, the result is instantaneous, compared to traditional barcode encryption methodologies, which require several seconds to reference a remote database.
